RAMADAN ZAKAT APPEAL
“Zakat is a right that the poor have upon the rich” (Sahih Bukhari)
What is Zakat?
Zakat is an obligatory charitable contribution in Islam. It is one of the five pillars of Islam and is considered a
religious duty for Muslims who are financially able to give. The word “zakat” literally means “purification” and “growth”.
Zakat is typically calculated as 2.5% of a person’s wealth and assets, including cash, gold, silver, and property
that have been held for at least a year. It is meant to be distributed to those in need, including the poor, the needy, debtors, travelers, and others.
Zakat is considered a means of purifying one’s wealth and of demonstrating compassion and solidarity with those who are less fortunate.
Zakat is distributed through various means, including through Islamic charities and organizations, and it is
typically collected and distributed during the month of Ramadan. Giving zakat is considered an act of worship
in Islam and is believed to bring blessings and rewards in this life and the afterlife.
